Work at Stardome

Below is a list of all the current vacancies at Stardome, and details of how to apply for the positions.

TELESCOPE VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers make a real difference to us at Stardome Observatory & Planetarium. We are pleased to have some dedicated people on board already, but we really need to recruit some more help for operating our telescopes in the evenings.

No experience necessary as full training will be given. Bring your own warm jacket and enthusiasm. Stardome operates telescope viewings Tuesday through to Sunday, so let us know which evenings you have free. We need you to be available on at least one evening per week, fortnight or month. You will be rostered on with an experienced team member who will assist with your training.

As a volunteer you will be welcomed and looked after by our Public Programmes Manager. Benefits include free entry to shows, and for those who volunteer more than 12 times per year, free membership to the Auckland Astronomical Society (AAS).

The basic prerequisites for volunteering are that you are 18 years or over, have a good grasp of the English language and a friendly smile.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY VOLUNTEERS

The Stardome Observatory in One Tree Hill runs School Holiday Sessions for children and we are looking for secondary school student and adult volunteers to assist with our arts and craft activities. We run two or three sessions daily (10am, 11am, 1pm) for 2 weeks each school holidays. We have approx 75 children and adults in each session group. Each session consists of a feature show in our Planetarium theatre, followed by an arts & crafts activity. Volunteers are rostered from 9am to 3pm. Volunteers can nominate how many days they wish to work.

The work consists of assisting with setup, helping children with the activities, assisting with clean-up and  watching our feature show in the Planetarium with the children. There will be time during the day for coffee/lunch break. At the end of the holiday, each volunteer receives a written reference from us. If you are interested, please phone or email the Education Manager (education@stardome.org.nz), including your name and phone number so we can contact you to discuss the details.

Volunteers find their time with us to be a memorable and rewarding experience.
