Stellar Volunteers

Become a Stellar Volunteer at Stardome

Volunteers make a real difference to us at Stardome Observatory & Planetarium. We are pleased to have some dedicated people on board already, but we really need to recruit some more help.

Volunteers are engaged in a wide variety of projects from operating telescopes, working in the shop, helping out with events, and assisting with the school holiday sessions.

As a volunteer you will be welcomed and looked after by our Public Programmes Manager. You'll also get to know many Stardome staff during the comprehensive volunteer training programme. If you have some spare time (or know of someone who has) why not join us as a Stellar Volunteer. You do not have to be an expert in astronomy, we can help you along the way and you will get to learn lots too. The basic prerequisites for volunteering are that you are 18 years or over, have a good grasp of the English language and a friendly smile. We welcome all who would like to give some time to help us make astronomy and space science accessible to all of Auckland.

 School Holiday Volunteers

The Stardome Observatory in One Tree Hill runs School Holiday Sessions for children and we are looking for secondary school student and adult volunteers to assist with our arts and craft activities. We run 2 sessions daily (10am-11.30am & 1pm-2.30pm) for two weeks each school holidays. We have approx 75 children and adults in each session group. Each session consists of a feature show in our Planetarium theatre, followed by an arts & crafts activity. Volunteers are rostered from 9am to 3pm. Volunteers can nominate how many days they wish to work.

The work consists of assisting with setup, helping children with the activities, assisting with clean-up and  watching our feature show in the Planetarium with the children. There will be time during the day for coffee/lunch break. At the end of the holiday, each volunteer receives a written reference from us. If you are interested, please phone or email the Education Manager (education@stardome.org.nz), including your name and phone number so we can contact you to discuss the details.

Most volunteers find their time with us to be a memorable and rewarding experience.
